General Information about the Two Umbrian Farmhouses Near Orvieto:
Setting and location: My family and I have stayed in the Umbrian farmhouse three times for a total of 4 weeks. Attached are color copies of photographs I took of the house, as well as of the farm and the landscape immediately adjacent to it. The farmhouse is located about a mile from the small town of Castel Giorgio. It is about 10 miles southwest of the lovely medieval hill town of Orvieto and about equal distance north of a large and very beautiful volcanic lake ("lago" in Italian) called Lago di Bolsena. (Bolsena is itself a wonderful medieval hill town right on the lake). Rome is about an hour away by car or train (about 60 miles).
The immediate area offers many fascinating points of interest. Besides Orvieto, with its famous cathedral, elegant shopping and many winding medieval streets, there are dozens of essentially unknown, but beautiful hill towns within easy driving distance. Also very interesting and surprisingly unknown is the Etruscan (pre-Roman civilization) necropolis, which runs for several miles along the little road between Grádoli and Grotte di Castro above Lago di Bolsena (a few miles from the farmhouse). This necropolis is still being studied by archaeologists and can be visited informally at will. The famous Umbrian towns of Perugia and Assisi are also an easy day trip away.
Castel Giorgio is a quiet town of a few thousand people and offers complete grocery shopping, restaurants, cafes and other services. It is in the midst of a gently rolling, agricultural area of various crops (wine, olives, tree fruit, potatoes, hay, cattle), meadows and wood lots. A rental car is the easiest way to get around, but there are also several buses daily between Orvieto and Castel Giorgio, and Orvieto is on the main train line, north to Florence and Siena, and south to Rome, with approximately ten trains daily on that route.
The farmhouse: The main farmhouse contains apartments #1 (entire ground floor) and #2 (entire second story). Apartment #3 shares a thick, stone wall with another farmhouse, which is across the driveway. The other farmhouse is the home of the very friendly and helpful people who work the farm. They have a few head of cattle, chickens, etc. and will gladly sell you eggs, honey, even a fresh chicken, all at reasonable prices.
Each apartment features beautiful, natural clay tiles and exposed beam ceilings and has been recently completely updated with new appliances, beds and other furniture. Each apartment also has a full complement of kitchen equipment, central heating, a separate entrance and its own private patio, with outdoor table and chairs and use of a grill.
Apartments #1 and #2 are substantially identical, each with three bedrooms (each with an Italian-style divided double bed), a large kitchen/dining room, fireplace and bathroom with shower.
Apartment #3 has a very large living/dining room (with kitchenette and fireplace), and a bathroom on the ground floor. On the second floor, there are two bedrooms (each with an Italian-style divided double bed), each with its own bathroom.
Terms of rental: The rent for each apartment is €1,000 per week in June, July, August and September, €900 per week in April, May and October and at Christmas, New Years and Easter, and €800 per week in other months. There are modest additional charges for electricity and gas. The rental period runs from Saturday afternoon to the following Saturday morning. Once you let me know a specific rental period in which you are interested, I will check availability with my client. Payment terms are a 30% (of the total rent) non-refundable payment at the time of booking with the non-refundable balance due 60 days before scheduled arrival. Payment is to be made in advance to me, and I will transfer it to him. A fully refundable security deposit is payable on arrival.
