General Information: 15th Century Farmhouse near Vezelay (Burgundy), France
(about 1.5 hours southeast of Paris)
The setting and location - Burgundy: The classic stone farmhouse is located a few miles from the town of Vezelay, itself a U.N.E.S.C.O. designated World Heritage site and home of the Basilica of Ste. Madeleine, an 11th Century marvel of Romanesque architecture, where the Second and Third Crusade began.
Vezelay is situated in the western half of Burgundy, about 1.5 hours drive from Paris and about one hour drive west of Dijon, the capital of Burgundy and a beautiful medieval city with many fine Romanesque and Gothic buildings and the second largest art museum in France. At Dijon begins the Cote d’Or, the ridge that runs between Dijon and Beaune, and which is the home of the world class wines of Burgundy.
The Burgundy region is a favorite of the French. The ancient pastoral landscape is dotted with hundreds of medieval villages and small towns still almost completely untouched by the 20th Century. One can visit countless medieval churches and castles of the highest artistic and historical value. Burgundy is famous not only for its art, history and its wonderful wines, but also for its fine food.
The Farmhouse: The spacious (about 1700 square feet, three bedrooms, sleeps 6 or 7) farmhouse has been completely and carefully restored, while at the same time being brought up to contemporary standards, with a new central, radiant heating system and new electrical and plumbing systems. It is very attractively and tastefully decorated and generously furnished with high quality furniture and kitchen equipment.
On the ground floor, the formal entry area opens to a large (450 square feet) living/dining room, with a beautiful stone fireplace and kitchenette (with all new appliances, including four burner gas stove, dishwasher and large refrigerator/freezer). At the rear of this room is a glass door to a pleasant patio, with table, chairs and sun umbrella for outdoor dining. On this floor there is also a large bedroom (one double bed) with another glass door onto the back yard. A bathroom (with shower and clothes washer) and a separate W.C. (the French tend to separate their toilets from their bathrooms) complete the ground floor.
The upper floor has two bedrooms (one with one double bed and one with two single beds), a living room with television and a futon, which could sleep one (or two children), a bathroom (with bathtub) and a separate W.C. Barbecue grill and ping pong table are provided.
The management: The farmhouse is managed by the owners, who live on a large farm nearby.
